Cybercrime: A New Kind of Natural Disaster

September 12, 2017
12:15pm - 12:45pm
Grand Ballroom

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has taken the first steps toward bringing advanced cybersecurity analytics into the emergency response war room, demonstrating that cyber events are now as real as a natural disaster – just like a hurricane or tornado.

WannaCry was a wake-up call. If it had been a devastating zero day threat that shut down hospitals and other clinical facilities across a broad geographic area and endangered patients, how should traditional emergency response organizations be prepared? What is the role of a lead sector agency in supporting the Healthcare sector response when manpower, material, and financial resources are challenged by a cyber disaster?

In this session, a top HHS cyber official discusses the department’s new Health Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (HCCIC), which is at the core of the agency’s mandate to create a coordinated response to cybercrime. This includes working cooperatively with healthcare providers and other government agencies, sharing information to head off a threat before it creates havoc and responding after it does.
