The cyber threats facing healthcare providers have rapidly evolved from nuisance and disruption to highly coordinate multi-stage attacks perpetrated by organized crime rings and nation states. Healthcare providers and broader integrated research and care systems need to quickly catch up to provide a reasonable level of defense. IT security and the need to deploy and manage the computing infrastructure from the data center to mobile devices needs to become an executive level business function with clear representation at the CEO, CFO, and board of directors level in order to enable the organization's business strategy. It can no longer be treated as a tactical function, and privacy and security officers need a loud voice across the organization as opposed to just within the office of the CIO.
